Essentially, the "mailing checklist" covers every conceivable detail associated with a mailing. It is what we use to ask good questions in the beginning so that a mailing is built on a solid foundation and flows well
through the entire production process. It really does make a mailing plan fool proof. Mailings can be very complicated and a lot of information is shared between vendors and clients. Problems normally arise as a result of communication breakdowns. The fill in the blank, checklist approach that we utilize eliminates the possibility of communication problems and bad mailings.
The moment a new client informs us of an impending mailing, we send them a blank checklist. Then, on the telephone, we review the entire form with the client. Existing clients initiate their mailings using the same process. We are literally "on the same page," so to speak, from the very outset. Nobody is making assumptions. Assumptions are the kiss of death when it comes to mailings.  
Many of our clients know how to fill in a checklist on their own because they understand all of the the questions being asked, through experience. On the other hand, some clients have not been doing mailings long enough to know how to answer all that is being asked. Either way, the checklist keeps us all out of trouble, all of the time.
